Protection measures, implemented in LIFE DINALP BEAR, successfully transferred to other projects and practices

In LIFE DINALP BEAR and LIFE SloWolf projects we established a good cooperation with numerous livestock breeders, beekeepers, municipalities and local communities, that now successfully adopt effective protection measures against damage on human property caused by large carnivores. We expect this to have effect on gradual decrease of number of conflicts between human and bear […]

Cooperation with stakeholders promotes tolerance towards bears

Due to numerous social-economic questions, the conservation of large carnivores is a demanding process, which is not under the natural sciences domain only. Likewise, the conservation of brown bear depends largely on human acceptance. Low tolerance represents one of the major threats to brown bear conservation. In efforts to decrease the frequency of damage cases […]

The Final Project Report submitted

Last month, our project steering group reached a breaking point with submitting project’s “Final Report” to the European Commission and our co-financers. We have also produced a “Layman’s Report” for general public, where we summarized in a comprehensive and interesting manner project objectives, background, challenges, and results, which we achieved during the last five years […]

Last visit of our project monitor

In September, the project-coordinating partner, Slovenia Forest Service, hosted project’s last monitor visit in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We were glad to receive our project monitor, Prof. dr. M. Kaligarič, and a representative of our co-financer, Slovenian Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Mrs. J. Lebez-Lozej. That morning started with a demanding objective: to get through all […]

Protecting goats in Slovenian Alps with high electric fence

We have successfully set a night enclosure of high electric fence on the mountain pasture »Božca« near mountain “Kobariški stol” in the Slovenian Alps. In the past months there have been several wolf attacks on livestock here and on the neighboring mountain pastures, so the local damage inspector gave the initiative to build a night […]

Impact factors in occurrence of human-bear conflicts

Among many different possible conflicts between humans and bears, those that are a consequence of bear feeding behaviour are the most common. The distribution and gravity of conflicts depend not only on the quantity and on availability of anthropogenic food sources, but also on habitat characteristics, structure of landscape (overlap between bear habitat and settlements) […]

Guidelines for optimisation of bear population monitoring in Slovenia

In Slovenia, a variety of indicators for the brown bear population status, impact of bears on the environment and their interactions with humans have long been monitored. Number of monitored indicators has increased over time, some of them thus becoming redundant, which is why it makes sense to optimise the entire bear monitoring scheme at […]

What can data from long-term systematic counting at permanent counting sites tell us about bears in Slovenia?

Systematic bear counting on a network of permanent counting sites (feeding sites) is the oldest brown bear monitoring method in Slovenia aside from mortality recordings. In its present form it was introduced in 2004, but its beginnings date back to the early 1990s. The monitoring method has significant potential and in this report we provide […]
